How To Bet On The Jockey Club Gold Cup – Morning Line Odds and Pick

The Jockey Club Gold Cup takes place at Belmont Park this Saturday evening.  It’s the final “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders Cup Classic, on top of having a large $1,000,000 purse, so there’s a lot to race for.

We have an interesting 7 horse field, with Keen Ice as the name most horse racing fans should remember, but Pavel and Diversify are both lightly used horses who are ready for a step up in race distance and competition.

In this article I will provide the morning line odds for the 7 horses in the field, my pick to win the race and a step by step guide outlining how to place your Jockey Club Gold Cup bets online.

2017 Jockey Club Gold Cup Betting Lines

Here are the morning line odds for this years edition of the Jockey Club Gold Cup from Belmont Park.  The odds will change leading up to the race depending on the amount of money bet on each contender.

  • Keen Ice 9/5
  • Pavel 5/2
  • Diversify 7/2
  • Rally Cry 6/1
  • Good Samaritan 8/1
  • Destin 12/1
  • Highland Sky 20/1

Keen Ice and Pavel are both just over 2/1 favourites in the race, while Diversify is right there as well at a little bit higher than 3/1.  It will very likely be one of these three horses who wins on Saturday, but Rally Cry and Good Samaritan also have outside chances.

My Pick

I’m going with the favourite, Keen Ice, to win this race based on his experience.  He finished second to Gun Runner (no shame in that) at the Whitney Stakes in August, and won the Suburban Handicap at the same 1 1/4 mile distance in July.  Neither Pavel or Diversify have even ran this long of a race in their careers and that can play a huge factor on us not really knowing how the horses will react when push comes to shove down the stretch.

Keen Ice has also not been overworked this year even though he has a great deal of experience over the past few seasons.  The trainers have only run Keen Ice four times this year, with the first two being at the massive Pegasus and Dubai World Cup’s early in the season.  He ran in July and August and has now taken a month off in September, so I fully expect him to be ready to put down a nice time and show that he’s the truly elite horse in this field.

Play: Keen Ice 9/5

Here’s a video of Keen Ice winning the Suburban Handicap in July at the same distance to give you an idea of his capabilities. It was a very nice run down the stretch to beat the favorite Shaman Ghost by four lengths.
