Bet On The 2023 Kentucky Derby – Odds and Picks

The biggest race in the USA is only a few days away and I can feel the hype starting to build up for the horse racing season.  The Kentucky Derby is the second most bet on sporting event in North America, second to only the Super Bowl.

This years Derby will take place this Saturday, May 6th at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.

A field of 20 horses is expected to run on Saturday, and with most of the these horses having only competed a few times, it will take some insightful handicapping to pick a winner.

In this article I’ll look at the morning line odds for all of the horses in this years Kentucky Derby and also provide a step by step guide to placing a bet on the Kentucky Derby this year.

2023 Kentucky Derby Morning Line Odds

Here are the morning line odds for the race.  These odds were set by Mike Battaglia for the 49th straight year, and they are considered a prediction of what the odds will be on race day. The odds will change depending on the amount of money bet on each horse leading up to the race.

  1. Hit Show 30-1
  2. Verifying 15-1
  3. Two Phil’s 12-1
  4. Confidence Game 20-1
  5. Tapit Trice 5-1
  6. Kingsbarns 12-1
  7. Reincarnate 50-1
  8. Mage 15-1
  9. Skinner 20-1
  10. Practical Move 10-1

  12. Jace’s Road 50-1
  13. Sun Thunder 50-1
  14. Angel of Empire 8-1
  15. Forte 3-1
  16. Raise Cain 50-1
  17. Derma Sotogake 10-1
  18. Rocket Can 30-1
  19. Lord Miles 30-1
  20. Continuar 50-1

The horses are listed in order of their post position.

My Pick

I’m on Forte to win this race. He was listed as the favorite at most betting sites before the post positions were drawn, and he has kept that designation after drawing post 15.

Forte has won his last five races, including the Florida Derby last month, and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November. He had a poor race by his standards at the Florida Derby, and was boxed in leading into the stretch, but he was still able to find another gear to win the race down the stretch. Being able to find a way to win when he didn’t look at his best, and when the race did not go his way, has given me confidence that this horse is a winner. I think he will look much better his second running at 10 furlongs on Saturday at the Derby.

Play: Forte 3-1

At the time of this article you can bet on Epicenter in the BetOnline.ag sportsbook at odds of +325. I think that’s a great value bet because I expect him to close near his +300 morning line odds on race day.
