San Antonio is a great city and despite not having as many pro sports teams as Dallas or Houston, the sports betting culture is still very strong in San Antonio.  The San Antonio Spurs of the NBA are a big part of this due to them being perennial contenders who have won the NBA Championship 5 times since 1999. The Spurs are currently in a rebuilding phase.

On this page I’ll discuss whether sports betting is legal in San Antonio (it’s a two part question) and then suggest a couple of offshore sports betting sites for San Antonio residents to use and also touch on a popular horse racing track in the region.

Is Sports Betting Legal in San Antonio?

I have to discuss this as a two part question.  The first question is really if it’s legal to operate a sports betting operation in San Antonio.  The answer to this question would be NO.  It is not legal for anyone to operate and run a sportsbook in Texas.

Now back to the original question of whether San Antonio residents are allowed to place sports bets.  The answer to this question is YES they are.  As long as you are betting through an offshore sportsbook that accepts American residents and that is licensed and regulated in a jurisdiction outside of the USA you are able to wager on sports from San Antonio.

**A new bill looking to legalize sports betting in Texas was introduced during the 2023 Texas Legislature. If approved the bill would require a statewide vote in November of 2023 because it’s proposing a constitutional amendment. If the bill is not approved or the vote fails then legalized sports betting in Texas will have to wait until at least 2025 because the Texas Legislature only meets every two years.

Offline Sports Betting in San Antonio

There is no offline sports betting offered in the State of Texas.  If you want to place a sports wager through a land based sportsbook you will need to do so in Nevada.

That said, offline horse race betting is legal in Texas and offered directly at the racetrack.

Retama Park

Retama Park is a short 20 minute drive north of downtown San Antonio.  There are around 50 live racing days each year split between the spring and fall racing seasons.  You are able to wager on each of the live races directly at the track.  You are also able to wager on horse races from across the USA at Retama Park daily.

If you’re not able to make it to the track you can also wager on the live races through either of the sportsbooks I outlined above.
