The biggest race in the USA is only a few days away and I can feel the hype starting to build up for the horse racing season. The Kentucky Derby is the second most bet on sporting event in North America, only second to the Super Bowl, which shows that this race is big business.
The Derby is always a ton of fun for me because it’s somewhat of a blank canvas heading into the race. We don’t really know who the best 3-year old horse in the nation is and this makes the race very interesting, as well as giving bettors a shot at some decent odds if you do the research. This year the race is especially wide open with no clear cut favorite and 5 horses with 8/1 or better odds of winning the Kentucky Derby as I write this article.
Omaha Beach was the favorite at 4/1, but he had to pull out of the race on Wednesday, leaving the race very wide open. There are now five horses with a great chance of winning the Derby: Game Winner (9/2), Roadster (6/1), Improbable (6/1), Maximum Security (8/1) and Tacitus (8/1).
In this article I’ll look at the morning line odds for all of the horses in this years Kentucky Derby and also provide a step by step guide to placing a bet on the Kentucky Derby this year.

I was on Omaha Beach at 4/1, so after he was scratched on Wednesday I had to dive back into the research tank to find which horse I would be backing on Saturday.
I came out of the research session thinking Maximum Security at 8-1 has a great shot at winning this race. He’s won all four races he’s run in his short career, including running away from a field that included Bodexpress and Code of Honor at the Florida Derby.
I like to back horses that know how to win and Maximum Security has never lost a horse race. He put down a very fast time at the Florida Derby and literally ran away from the field after taking the early lead in that race. I like what I see in this horse and at 8-1 he’s my play this Saturday.
Play: Maximum Security 8/1
