The Canadian International Stakes is the richest horse race held in Canada every year. The race is held at the Woodbine Racetrack near Toronto, Ontario every October and has a purse of $1.5 million. That is compared to the Queen’s Plate which has a purse of $1 million and is the second richest race in Canada every year.
The race is 1.5 miles long and run on Turf. The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, which means the winner of the race automatically qualifies for the Breeders’ Cup Turf race in November.

Canadian International Stakes History
The Canadian International Stakes race was first run at Long Beach Racetrack in Toronto in 1938. It was originally called The Long Beach Championship. The very next year the name was changed to the Canadian International Stakes. From 1966 to 1980 the name was changed to the Canadian International Championship Stakes, but the organizers realized that was too long of a name and the race name was changed back to Canadian International Stakes in 1981.
The race took place at the Long Beach Racetrack for 20 years, until 1958 when it was moved to its current location and track at Woodbine Racetrack.
One huge piece of history that the Canadian International Stakes race will always have is that it was the last race that Secretariat competed at. Secretariat, one of the most well known and dominant horses in history won his last race there in 1973 by 6.5 lengths. This margin of victory is still the largest winning margin at the race to this day.
