Sports Betting in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska

It is not currently legal to operate a sportsbook in Kansas, Missouri or Nebraska. That said, if you live in any of these states you can still bet on sports online, you will just have to use an offshore betting site that is licensed and regulated outside of the USA. Both and fall into this category, while accepting American players.

In Kansas a bill related to sports gambling was introduced in early 2019, but no progress has been made.

Missouri is in a similar situation with several sports betting bills introduced in January 2019, but it does not seem like the bills have progressed beyond the committee stage.

Nebraska may be the closest of the three states to regulating sports betting. A new bill introduced in 2020 is attempting to classify sports betting as a game of skill, which would exempt it from the states gambling ban. Again, no progress has been made.

Common NBA Bets

The three NBA bets that take the majority of betting handle are the spread, money line and over/under. You will find these three bets featured for all NBA games at

Point Spread

The point spread is the most popular bet for every NBA game. The sportsbook will set a spread in order to handicap the game. The favorite must win by more than the spread amount, while the underdog must either win the game outright or lose by fewer points than the spread.

In this example the Chicago Bulls are 5 point favorites, as indicated by the (-5). They must win the game by 6 or more points for a spread bet on the Bulls to win. The Pistons are 5 point underdogs (+5). Detroit must either win the game outright or lose by 4 or fewer points for a spread bet on the Pistons to win. If the Bulls win by exactly 5 points then the spread bets would push and wagers would be refunded.

Money Line (To Win)

A money line bet is simply a wager on which team wins the game outright. The odds will indicate the risk vs reward of betting on either team. Betting on the favorite will win less money than betting on the underdog.

In this example the Bulls are -210 favorites, which means you would have to bet $210 to win $100 betting on the Bulls. The Pistons are +175 underdogs, so a $100 wager on Detroit would win $175 if they pull off the upset.

Over/Under (Totals)

The over/under, also known as the total, is a bet on the number of points scored by both teams in the game. The sportsbook will set at total and you can bet on whether the amount of points scored will be over or under this amount.

In this example the over/under is set at 218 points. Over bets would win if 219 or more points are scored in the game, while under bets would win if 217 or fewer points are scored. If exactly 218 points are scored then the total bets would push and wagers would be refunded.
