My Pick

The Giants have already secured a playoff spot, but can eliminate their hated rivals from playoff contention with a win on Sunday. The team has won eight of their last 10 games and are one of the most dangerous teams in the NFC heading into the playoffs.

After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, the Giants decided to spend some money improving their defense, which has worked out very well for the team. Last season, the Giants had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, but this year they are third in points allowed per game, holding opponents to 18.3 points per game.

Offensively, the Giants are still relying too much on Eli Manning, due to the fact that they have one of the worst rushing attacks in the league, averaging 83.4 rushing yards per game, which is 29th in the league.

Like the Giants, the Redskins decided to improve their defense in the offseason, and signed former Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman to a long term deal in free agency. Unlike the Giants, the Redskins defense didn’t improve drastically this year and they are allowing opponents to score 24.3 points per game.

Washington’s strength is in its offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. During the offseason, the Redskins were unwilling to give Cousins a long-term deal because they had doubts that he could become the team’s franchise quarterback.

With one game left in the season, Cousins is the second leading passer in the NFL, with 4,630 yards. Unlike the Giants, the Redskins also have a very good rushing game that averages 110.5 yards per game, which is 10th in the league.

With Cousins throwing the ball so well this year, expect to see the Redskins attack the Giants’ secondary, which has been decimated by injuries. However, the Redskins will need to figure out a way to slow down Odell Beckham Jr. who had 121 yards in the first meeting between the two teams, and has been playing well lately.

In the first meeting, the Giants blew a 21-9 lead and ended up losing 29-27 on a last minute field goal. This time around, New York will hoping to avoid a similar letdown.

Even if the Redskins win, they can still be eliminated from the playoffs if the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions finish in a tie, but they will need to handle their business against the Giants before they can afford to worry about circumstances outside their control.

Final word…

The Redskins have a lot on the line, so I expect them to be at their best. However, the Giants have revenge on their mind and would love nothing more than to knock their rivals out of the playoffs, which is why I’m picking the Giants to cover the spread.
