The Florida Derby is scheduled to take place this Saturday, April 2nd at Gulfstream Park racetrack. This is one of the last chances for horses to pick up qualifying points for the 2022 Kentucky Derby, so there is a lot on the line in addition to the $1,000,000 prize pool.
In this article I will outline the morning line odds for the 11 horses set to race on Saturday, give my favorite betting pick, and provide a simple three step guide you can follow to get your Florida Derby bets placed online.
2022 Florida Derby Betting Odds
Here are the morning line odds and post positions for this years Florida Derby. The odds will change leading up to the race depending on the amount of money wagered on each horse.
- Strike Hard 20-1
- Classic Causeway 7-2
- Simplification 5-2
- King of Truth 50-1
- Pappacap 10-1
- Charge It 7-2
- White Abarrio 3-1
- Cajun’s Magic 30-1
- O Captain 20-1
- Clapton 30-1
- Steal Sunshine 30-1
Simplification is the favorite at odds of 5/2. White Abarrio (3-1), Classic Causeway (7/2) and Charge It (7/2) are the other main contenders, with the other 7 horses coming in at odds of 10-1 or longer.
I’m surprised that Simplification is the favorite according to the morning line odds. Yes, he’s a strong horse that has won half of his 6 career races, but he finished second to White Abarrio just two months back in the Holy Bull race on February 5th. White Abarrio has won 3 of his 4 career races and will come into the Florida Derby well rested with the Holy Bull being his only race in 2022.
Classic Causeway is also an interesting horse that has won his last two races. Charge It only has two races under his belt with both being at just 1 mile distance. He had a strong time in his recent 1 mile race, but I still think jumping right up to 1 1/8 miles may be too much for him.
I like White Abarrio at odds of 3/1. I would not be surprised if he is the favorite come post time on Saturday.
Play: White Abarrior 3-1
