The Florida Derby is scheduled to take place this Saturday, April 1st at Gulfstream Park racetrack. This is one of the last chances for horses to pick up qualifying points for the 2023 Kentucky Derby, so there is a lot on the line in addition to the $1,000,000 prize pool.
In this article I will outline the morning line odds for the 12 horses set to race on Saturday, give my favorite betting pick, and provide a simple three step guide you can follow to get your Florida Derby bets placed online.
2023 Florida Derby Betting Odds
Here are the morning line odds and post positions for this years Florida Derby. The odds will change leading up to the race depending on the amount of money wagered on each horse.
- Jungfrau 20-1
- West Coast Cowboy 20-1
- Shaq Diesel 30-1
- Mage 10-1
- Mr. Peeks 30-1
- Nautical Star 30-1
- Il Miracolo 30-1
- Mr. Ripple 30-1
- Cyclone Mischief 8-1
- Fort Bragg 5-1
- Forte 4/5
- Dubyuhnell 6-1
Forte is the favorite at odds of 4/5. Fort Bragg (5-1), Dubyuhnell (6-1) and Cyclone Mischief (8-1) are the other main contenders, with the other 8 horses coming in at odds of 10-1 or longer.
My Pick
I can’t bring myself to pick against Forte in this race. He’s won four straight races including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November. I’m not sold on him as a Kentucky Derby favorite, but I do think he’s clearly the fastest horse in this field.
Forte has done what he’s had to in order to win his last four races, so it’s possible he has more in the tank as well. Hopefully one of the other horses in this field push him down the stretch so we can see Forte’s full capabilities.
I don’t see anyone who can challenge Forte in this field, so I like him even at odds of 4/5.
Play: Forte 4/5
