The Pegasus World Cup is set to run its third annual race on January 26th at Gulfstream Park in Florida, and it’s once again bringing out the best horses in the world. The Pegasus World Cup is decreasing the prize pool this year from $16 million down to $9 million (while also reducing the entry fee from $1M down to $500K), but this kind of money is still enough to attract the top horses in the world, including Accelerate who is coming off his win at the Breeders Cup Classic back in November.
Gun Runner, the defending champ, will unfortunately not be in the field, after retiring from racing following his win at the Pegasus World Cup last year. That said, it’s time for a new horse to really grab the imaginations of the horse racing world and a dominant performance from Accelerate at this massive event would do just that.
In this article I’ll take a look at the early Pegasus World Cup betting odds and also provide you with a step by step guide to placing your Pegasus World Cup bets online leading up to the race.
2019 Pegasus World Cup Odds
Here are the current odds for this race from Bovada.lv. These are futures odds and will remain fixed when you place your bet before the 26th. If you place your wager on race day in the Bovada Racebook then the odds will use the parimutuel betting format, which means the odds can move depending on the amount of money coming in on each horse.
It’s very difficult to pick against Accelerate in this spot. As we saw with Arrogate in 2016 and Gun Runner in 2017 once a horse really begins to assert dominance in fields that include the best horses in the world, it is very difficult for other horses to surpass him. Accelerate won 6 of the 7 races he entered in 2018, including the Breeders Cup Classic, and several other high end G1 races.
That said, the race that Accelerate didn’t win, he finished second to City of Light. Some people will look at that race and think City of Light may have the edge, but let’s not forget that Accelerate beat City of Light the very next month at the Gold Cup at Santa Anita.
City of Light has been fairly impressive, but I think Accelerate’s consistency, experience and form should give him the edge. At these odds I think there is still value in Accelerate in this years Pegasus World Cup.
Play: Accelerate +175
Here’s a look at this past years Breeders’ Cup Classic where you can see Accelerate, Gunnevera, Yoshida and Mckinzie battle it out.
