The biggest horse race of the coming weekend is the 2019 Travers Stakes, which is held at Saratoga Race Course in New York State. The race is full of high quality horses, several of which participated in the Triple Crown races this year. As quality of a field it is, we are still missing who most consider the top three-year-olds in the world in War of Will, Game Winner and Maximum Security, which is surprising with 1.25 million dollars up for grabs.
Tacitus, who finished 3rd at the Kentucky Derby and 2nd at the Belmont Stakes, is the favorite to win the race, and the most accomplished horse in the field. Code of Honor, who finished second at the Derby, is the second favorite. Tax, is another top contender, after finishing ahead of Tacitus to win the recent Jim Dandy Stakes.
In this article I will provide the morning line odds for the 12 horses in the field and also provide my top picks for the race. At the bottom of the page I will provide a simple 3 step guide that you can follow to place a bet on the Travers Stakes this year if you live in the USA.
2019 Travers Stakes Odds
Here are the morning line odds (and post positions) for this years Travers Stakes race. These odds are not fixed and will change throughout race day depending on which horses are bet on throughout the day.
- Owendale 6-1
- Code of Honor 4-1
- Highest Honors 10-1
- Laughing Fox 30-1
- Everfast 30-1
- Tacitus 5-2
- Mucho Gusto 6-1
- Chess Chief 30-1
- Looking At Bikinis 10-1
- Scars Are Cool 30-1
- Endorsed 15-1
- Tax 6-1
Tacitus is the clear favorite with odds of 5-2 having performed the best in the Triple Crown races this year (3rd at the Derby and 2nd at the Belmont).
Code of Honor is the second favorite with odds of 4-1. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby, and has followed that up with a win in the short 1 mile Dwyer-G3 race.
There are three horses at 6-1 who round out the contenders. These include Tax, Owendale and Mucho Gusto. I actually think the winner will come out of these three, which I will get into with my pick below.
I’m surprised to see Tacitus and Code of Honor with shorter odds than the horses at 6-1.
Tacitus contended in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Jim Dandy, but he failed to win any of these races, and he was actually beaten by both Tax (Jim Dandy) and Code of Honor (Derby) in this span.
Code of Honor is a strong horse, but he has yet to win a G1 race in his career.
Tax, at 6-1, is a great pick in my opinion. He beat Tacitus in the Jim Dandy in his last race, and his only really poor performance was at the Derby in wet conditions. I think he’s taken a step forward and another win this Saturday will cement him as one of the top 3-year-olds in the world.
Mucho Gusto, is the other 6-1 horse that I think has a great shot at winning. He’s coming off a 2nd place finish at the Haskell Invitational where he lost to Maximum Security, who I think is the fastest 3-year old in the world. Outside of that race, he’s won 5 of his other 7 starts. Winning is something I look for in horses, and in this field without the very elite 3-year-olds I think Mucho Gusto could also get the job done.
Plays: Tax 6/1 and Mucho Gusto 6/1
Here’s the race from the Jim Dandy where Tax took home the win:
