With $1 million in purse money, the Whitney Stakes is one of the richest horse races in America each year. Add in the fact that it’s another “win and you’re in” qualifier for the Breeders Cup Classic and it’s no wonder that a very strong field of horses head to Saratoga each year to compete in the Whitney.
This year McKinzie is the favorite, but Thunder Snow and Preservationist are also considered top contenders. McKinzie has finished top 2 in ten of his eleven career races, so he’s a very consistent runner who is always in the mix down the stretch. Thunder Snow is another consistently solid horse, and his win at the Dubai World Cup in March is the biggest win of any horse in the field. Preservationist is the least experienced of the favorites, but he has won four straight races, including a big win at the Suburban Handicap in July, which was his first jump into the big races.
In this article I will give you guys the morning line odds for the eight horses in the field, provide a value play that I think could hit and also give you a step by step guide to getting your bets in on the Whitney this Saturday.
The race will be broadcast on NBC Sports from 5-6pm, so place your bets, tune in, and watch the action.

2019 Whitney Stakes Betting Odds
Here are the morning line odds (and post positions) for the eight horses competing in this years Whitney Stakes race. It’s important to remember that these odds will change throughout race day depending on the amount of money that is being bet on each horse. If a lot of money comes in on a horse the odds will shorten and vice versa.
- Imperative 30-1
- Forewarned 30-1
- Monongahela 12-1
- Thunder Snow 3-1
- Vino Rosso 6-1
- McKinzie 7-5
- Yoshida 12-1
- Preservationist 3-1
As you can see McKinzie is the main favorite, with Thunder Snow, Preservationist, and the a lesser extent Vino Rossa, as his main competition.
Here’s the video of Preservationist’s big win at the Suburban Stakes last month. It was a very impressive race with a strong time.
I’m going with Preservationist in this race. He looked amazing at The Suburban Stakes last month, and I don’t see any reason why he won’t get this win if he has his best at the Whitney.
I think the race is too short for Thunder Snow, who performs better over longer distances, and I’m struggling to see why McKinzie is such a big favorite, having only won 1 of his last four races. Preservationist is an older horse, that is coming into his own this year after being given the opportunity to race consistently. I think he could have a tremendous season.
Vino Rosso is the other play I would consider at 6-1. He won the Gold Cup in May, and has won 2 of the 3 races he ran this year. He also won the Wood Memorial at this distance last year, so he has what it takes to get big wins. That said, my main pick to win is Preservationist.
Play: Preservationist 3-1
