With $750,000 in purse money, the Whitney Stakes is one of the richest horse races in America this year. Add in the fact that it’s a “win and you’re in” qualifier for the Breeders Cup Classic and it’s no wonder that a very strong field of horses head to Saratoga each year to compete in the Whitney.
This year the field is small with just five horses entered, but that includes four of the top horses in the world, and all five horses have earned over $1 million in their careers. Tom’s d’Etat is the favorite heading into the race, but Improbable, Code of Honor and By My Standards are also legitimate contenders, while Mr. Buff cannot be completely overlooked.
In this article I will give you guys the morning line odds for the five horses in the field, provide a value play that I think could hit and also give you a step by step guide to getting your bets in on the Whitney this Saturday.
The race will be broadcast on FS1, so place your bets, tune in, and watch the action.
2020 Whitney Stakes Betting Odds
Here are the morning line odds (and post positions) for the five horses competing in this years Whitney Stakes race. It’s important to remember that these odds will change throughout race day depending on the amount of money that is being bet on each horse. If a lot of money comes in on a horse the odds will shorten and vice versa.
- By My Standards 9-2
- Improbable 5-2
- Code of Honor 5-2
- Mr. Buff 12-1
- Tom’s d’Etat 6-5
As you can see Tom’s d’Etat is the main favorite, with Improbable, Code of Honor, and to a lesser extent By My Standards, as his main competition.
Here’s the video of Tom’s d’Etat’s impressive win at the Stephen Foster last month. By My Standards finished second in the race as well.
I’m going with By My Standards at 9-2 in this race. He had a more difficult race than Tom’s d’Etat at the Stephen Foster, and even though Tom’s d’Etat pulled away early in the stretch, it looked like By My Standard also had another gear that he could potentially get to with a cleaner race this Saturday. Let’s not forget that By My Standards also won the New Orleans Classic and Oaklawn Handicap earlier this year. I think he may be coming into his own and this race with four top quality horses could set up very well for him.
I do not think that either Improbable or Code of Honor are at their best at this distance of 1 1/8 miles. Neither Improbable or Code of Honor have ever won at this distance, with Improbable only competing at 1 1/8 miles twice (2nd and 4th) and Code of Honor once (3rd).
I expect this to be another battle between Tom’s d’Etat and By My Standards and based on the odds I think the sharper bet is on the 9-2 underdog rather than the 6-5 favorite.
Play: By My Standards 9-2
