Bet On The 2019 West Virginia Derby – Morning Line Odds and Pick

The West Virginia Derby is the biggest race to take place at Mountaineer Racetrack each year.  With $500k in prizes to be won the race always brings a solid field to West Virginia and 2019 is no different. Mr. Money headlines the field as the 2-1 favorite, with Math Wizard (7-2) and Top Line Growth (9-2) as his two main competitors. That said, with 10 horses set to race on Saturday there are plenty of ways this race could play out.

In this article I will give you the morning line odds for all of the horses in the field and also provide my value pick, which I feel pretty confident in for this race.  At the end of the article you’ll also find a quick and easy three step guide to getting your West Virginia Derby bets in for those of you who are new to betting online.

2019 West Virginia Derby Odds

Here are the morning line odds (and post positions) for this years West Virginia Derby.  It’s important to remember that these are the opening line odds and that they can change throughout race day depending on which horses are bet on the most throughout the day.  The morning line odds are really just predictions of what the odds will end up being come race time, but really it’s how much money that is bet on each horse that determines their true odds.

  1. Chess Chief 15-1
  2. Grumps Little Tots 12-1
  3. Conative 50-1
  4. Plus Que Parfait 6-1
  5. Cornstarch 30-1
  6. Fluminense 12-1
  7. Top Line Growth 9-2
  8. Math Wizard 7-2
  9. Mr. Money 2-1
  10. Chilly in Charge 20-1

Mr. Money has won his last three races, including last months Indiana Derby, but these races were all G3’s, and he’s yet to win a G2 or G1 race, so a win on Saturday would be the biggest of his career. Math Wizard was also in the Indiana Derby, finishing 3rd.

Here’s a look at the Indiana Derby replay to see the two favorites in action. **It’s a cool race too because a horse loses his rider out of the gates, but still proceeds to cross the finish line first.

My Pick

I’m going off the board with my pick and looking at Grumps Little Tots at 12-1 to get his maiden victory. He looked good finishing second at the Easy Goer in June, and with only three career races, I think this horse has the speed, and is ready to take that step forward with a win this Saturday.

Mr. Money is used to shorter distances than the 1 1/8 mile of the West Virginia Derby, so I think the stretch could be a concern for him. Math Wizard hasn’t won in 6 career races, so he’s definitely not worth his odds of 7-2, and Top Line Growth has a win, but only two races, and the win wasn’t a particularly fast time at the Iowa Derby.

I think this is a race that’s really up in the air, so I’m going with the bigger return of long odds on Grumps Little Tots.

Play: Grumps Little Tots 12-1
