The West Virginia Derby is the biggest race to take place at Mountaineer Racetrack each year. With $750k in prizes to be won the race always brings a solid field to West Virginia and 2017 is no different. Lookin At Lee and Patch, two horses who made names for themselves with solid performances in some of the Triple Crown races this year, headline the field, but with 11 horses set to race on Saturday there are plenty of ways this race could play out.
In this article I will give you the morning line odds for all of the horses in the field and also provide my value pick, which I feel pretty confident in for this race. At the end of the article you’ll also find a quick and easy three step guide to getting your West Virginia Derby bets in for those of you who are new to betting online.
2017 West Virginia Derby Odds
Here are the morning line odds for this years West Virginia Derby. It’s important to remember that these are the opening line odds and that they can change throughout race day depending on which horses are bet on the most throughout the day. The morning line odds are really just predictions of what the odds will end up being come race time, but really it’s how much money that is bet on each horse that determines their true odds.
- Lookin At Lee 3/1
- Patch 7/2
- B Squared 9/2
- McCormick 6/1
- Coloneldarkstemper 8/1
- Impressive Edge 8/1
- Phat Man 10/1
- Game Over 12/1
- Silver Dust 15/1
- Watch Me Whip 20/1
- Heartwood 50/1
Lookin at Lee and Patch are by far the most well known horses in this field thanks to their participation in the Triple Crown races this year (Lookin At Lee competed in all three races – second at Kentucky Derby, and Patch competed in the Derby and Belmont – third at Belmont).
That said, Lookin At Lee has not won a race in his last 9 outings and Patch has only one win in four career starts, so even though they have had strong results against the best in the world, neither horse has proven to be a winner at this point in his career.
Like I said above, neither Lookin At Lee or Patch have shown that they can finish first on a consistent basis, with their 3 combined wins all being very early in each of their careers and very small races. I’m going to look past these two and try to find value in one of the other horses in this field.
My favorite play of this field is definitely McCormick at 6/1 odds. He finished second to Hence in his last race at the Iowa Derby and Hence came from way, way back to get that win down the final stretch. McCormick was in the huge group up front and was able to finish atop that group, but didn’t account for Hence storming by on the outside at the last second. This shows me that McCormick is going to battle for the win and he refuses to lose. He simply wasn’t able to match the speed that Hence was coming with at the last second in that race. McCormick also won his previous two races before the Iowa Derby, which shows me he is a winner.
Check out the Iowa Derby below to see what I mean by Hence coming from way back.
Play: McCormick 6/1
