Bet On The 2018 West Virginia Derby – Morning Line Odds and Pick

The West Virginia Derby is the biggest race to take place at Mountaineer Racetrack each year.  With $500k in prizes to be won the race always brings a solid field to West Virginia and 2018 is no different.  Once On Whiskey and Draft Pick headline the field as co-favourites, but with 9 horses set to race on Saturday there are plenty of ways this race could play out.

In this article I will give you the morning line odds for all of the horses in the field and also provide my value pick, which I feel pretty confident in for this race.  At the end of the article you’ll also find a quick and easy three step guide to getting your West Virginia Derby bets in for those of you who are new to betting online.

2018 West Virginia Derby Odds

Here are the morning line odds for this years West Virginia Derby.  It’s important to remember that these are the opening line odds and that they can change throughout race day depending on which horses are bet on the most throughout the day.  The morning line odds are really just predictions of what the odds will end up being come race time, but really it’s how much money that is bet on each horse that determines their true odds.

  • Once On Whiskey 5/2
  • Draft Picks 3/1
  • High North 4/1
  • Mr Freeze 9/2
  • Lionite 6/1
  • Rugbyman 8/1
  • King Clause 15/1
  • Pamir 30/1
  • Caloric 50/1

Once On Whiskey won the Los Alamitos Derby last month, with Draft Pick finishing in second place.  These horses will do battle once again, but High North, Rugbyman and Mr Freeze all have realistic chances at the win as well.

Here’s a look at the Los Al Derby replay to see the two favorites in action:

My Pick

I like Draft Pick to get his revenge on Once On Whiskey this week in West Virginia.  If you watched the race above you can see that Once On Whiskey squeaked out the win in that race by a whisker, but it took a perfect run down the stretch to catch Draft Pick.

I think the way Draft Pick ran the race is a more consistent approach and he simply got caught at the line.  I think Draft Pick will win the battles between these two horses more times than not.

I do think these two favorites are a cut above the other horses in the field, so I’m willing to take Draft Pick at his expect odds.

Play: Draft Pick 3/1
