The Latvians shocked the world today when they were able to defeat a Switzerland team that had only given up 1 goal in their first three games of the tournament. Latvia got off to a quick 2-0 start in the first period and were able to hold the Swiss to one goal against for the rest of the game before adding an empty netter to win. The Latvians are definitely the easier team for Team Canada in the quarters and the spread of 3.5 goals shows this.

Even though Latvia did lose all three of their round robin games they actually had a fairly strong tournament even before the big upset win over Switzerland. They lost their first game 1-0 to Switzerland in the final few seconds of the game and then went on to only lose by 2 goals to each the Czech Republic and Sweden. I put Canada in a similar position as Sweden, but I do think they will be able to put up a better score than the Swedes against this Latvian team.
Latvia will be playing their second of back-to-back games and will likely be emotionally drained after a huge win for their country over the Swiss today. The Latvians will now feel like they succeeded in this tournament and pulled off an upset. When that happens it becomes much more difficult to pull off another upset, especially against a far stronger team. I expect the Latvians to let their feet off the pedal slightly in this game and Team Canada should make them pay.
The Canadians will be eager to earn their spot in the semi-finals as well and won’t be taking Latvia lightly. I expect them to be able to score at least 5 goals against Latvia, who don’t play a particularly defensive style.
I’m not a huge fan of the odds or the spread in this game because I think the Canadians could easily win by 3 goals, but if I had to choose I’d take the -3.5 for Team Canada in this game.
