Bet On The 2021 Preakness Stakes – Odds and Picks

The 2021 Preakness Stakes will take place this Saturday, May 15th at Pimlico Race Course. The race will return to it’s normal date on the third Saturday in May (two weeks after the Kentucky Derby) after last years race was postponed to October due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Medina Spirit will enter the Preakness Stakes as the favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby, but he will enter with a cloud of controversy after he failed his first post race drug test following the Derby. The Maryland Jockey Club was able to come to an agreement with Bob Baffert to allow Medina Spirit to race this Saturday, but he will receive additional drug testing this week and if he has another positive result he will be pulled from the race.

First, let’s take a look at Medina Spirit’s Kentucky Derby winning performance and then we will get into my Preakness picks.

In this article, I’ll look at the morning line odds for the Preakness Stakes and also give you a step by step guide to betting on the Preakness Stakes this year.

2021 Preakness Stakes Odds

Here are the morning line odds and post positions for the Preakness Stakes.  These odds will change throughout race day depending on the amount of money wagered on each horse.

  1. Ram 30-1
  2. Keepmeinmind 15-1
  3. Medina Spirit 9-5
  4. Crowded Trade 10-1
  5. Midnight Bourbon 5-1
  6. Rombauer 12-1
  7. France Go De Ina 20-1
  8. Unbridled Honor 15-1
  9. Risk Taking 15-1
  10. Concert Tour 5-2

As you can see Medina Spirit is the favorite to win the race at odds of 9-5, but Concert Tour is a close second with odds of 5-2. Midnight Bourbon is the other top contender to win the Preakness with odds of 5-1.

My Pick

I’m on Medina Spirit to win the Preakness. If he’s allowed to run I do think he’s the fastest horse in the field. Medina Spirit was overlooked heading into the Kentucky Derby because he had only won 2 of his 5 career races. But what that stat didn’t show was the fact that Medina Spirit had finished second to Life Is Good twice, and Life Is Good would have likely been the Derby favorite had he not been injured. The other second was the Santa Anita Derby just a few weeks before the Derby, so I think Medina Spirit may not have given it 100% in that race.

Medina Spirit is a fast horse and I don’t think the controversy surrounding his failed Derby drug test will have any affect on how he performs this weekend.

Play: Medina Spirit 5-2
