It’s fight week. Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are set to renew acquaintances for the third time this Saturday, September 17th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This long awaited trilogy bout will take place almost exactly four years after the rematch that Canelo won by majority decision, and five years since the first fight that ended in a split decision draw.
The first fight was tightly contested with a touch of controversy as most boxing fans were confused and outraged by a 118-10 scorecard in favor of Alvarez from judge Adelaide Byrd, while the other two judges saw the fight much closer (115-13 for GGG and 114-114). Boxing fans generally believed GGG edged out Canelo in the fight with 21 of 24 media member scorecards giving the win to GGG, while 3 had the fight as a draw and only 1 gave Alvarez the nod.
The rematch was more of the same with 10 media members scoring the fight for GGG, 8 seeing the fight as a draw, and only 1 media member scoring the fight for Canelo. The judges did not see it the same way, with two judges scoring the fight 115-113 for Canelo, which was enough for him to secure the official victory (the other judge had the fight ending in a draw).
A lot of boxing fans felt that GGG was robbed in the first two fights, but everyone agrees the fights were exciting, tightly contested bouts. I’m expecting the trilogy fight to draw plenty of eyes and bettors. For this reason I’ve created this simple 3 step guide to getting your bets placed online. This guide is geared towards American bettors.
