It’s fight week. Jake Paul is scheduled to fight UFC legend, Anderson Silva, in an 8 round boxing match at 187 pounds this Saturday, October 29th. The fight will take place in Glendale, Arizona and be broadcast on Showtime PPV.
Paul had two opponents fall through for an event in August that was expected to take place at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Paul had booked Tommy Fury (for the second time) and then Hasim Rahman Jr. to be his opponent on that card, but both up-and-coming boxers pulled out of the fight citing travel and weight issues, respectively. Paul’s critics have called for him to face a young professional boxer, but after two opponents that have matched that description have pulled out of fights, Paul has gone back to the MMA fighter turned boxer route to face one of the best MMA fighters of all-time in Anderson Silva.
Silva is 47 years old and boxing was not his primary profession so Paul’s critics are not happy with the opponent. That said, Silva won 2 professional boxing matches in 2021, including a victory over former champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which is a significantly better win than either Fury or Rahman Jr. have on their resumes. This leads me to conclude that Silva is more of a pro boxer, and a more dangerous opponent, than either of the two previous opponents Paul was supposed to fight.
