The Belmont Stakes is set to take place this Saturday evening at 5:42pm with the broadcast airing on NBC from 2:45-6pm EST.
The 2020 Belmont Stakes will be the first race of the Triple Crown and will run at a length of 9 furlongs (1 1/8 miles) instead of the traditional 12 furlongs (1 1/2 miles). The Belmont Stakes is traditionally the last race of the Triple Crown, but it’s being bumped to the front this year because the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes have been postponed to September and October, respectively.
With the Belmont Stakes replacing the Kentucky Derby as the first race of the Triple Crown I’m expecting the hype, media attention and betting that normally accompanies the Derby to transfer to the 2020 Belmont Stakes. For this reason I wanted to add this page to help California residents who are new to betting online, understand how to place a bet on the Belmont Stakes.
On this page I’ve outlined the best sportsbook for Californians, where you can bet on the Belmont Stakes in the State, I look at the current odds for the race and I finish up with a straight forward 3 step guide to get your bets placed on the race.

Where To Bet On Belmont Stakes in California
It is currently not legal to operate a sportsbook in the State of California. This may change in the future with a State-run betting platform a possibility, but at this time California residents must bet at an offshore betting site that is regulated and licensed outside of the United States. BetOnline.ag falls into this category as a betting site that is licensed and regulated in Panama, and that accepts players from across the United States.
The one exemption for sports betting in California is that you are able to bet on horse races across the country at racetracks. The big tracks in California such as Del Mar or Santa Anita Park will allow you to place bets on the Belmont Stakes directly at the track, and will likely have a special event planned for this years Belmont.
Check out our California sports betting section for a further look at the betting climate in the State.
Belmont Stakes Odds
Here’s a quick look at the odds and post positions for the Belmont Stakes from BetOnline. I think these odds are more accurate than the morning line, but they could still change leading up to post time on Saturday.
**The below odds are from June 19th.
As you can see Tiz the Law at -130 is a big favorite to win the race. He won the Florida Derby at the end of March and should be in good form for this distance heading into the Belmont.

Step 3. Bet On The Belmont Stakes
Depending on whether you’re placing your Belmont Stakes bets on race day or in the days leading up to June 20th there are two different ways you can wager.
Leading Up To Race Day
Click on ‘Sports’ from the top navigation bar, open up the ‘Horse Racing’ drop down menu and select ‘Horse Futures’.
Next you can pick the horse you wish to bet on, select ‘Straight Bet’ under the ‘Bet Slip’ on the right sidebar, enter your risk amount and click ‘Place my bet’. Here’s a screenshot to show you the clicks for a bet on Sole Volante at +700.
On Race Day (June 20th)
On race day you can place your bets in the ‘Racebook’ section of the site.
Select ‘Belmont Park’ from the ‘Thoroughbred’ drop down menu in the left sidebar to bring up all of the horse races at Belmont Park. Select ‘Jun 20’ and race #10, then select the type of wager you want to make (win-place-show, exacta, superfecta, etc). Enter your bet amount and select ‘Add to bet slip’, and then click ‘Submit all bets’ to lock in the wager.
The wagers placed at the sportsbook will be using the parimutuel betting system which means the odds vary depending on the amount wagered on each horse.
