Sports Betting in Oregon and Montana
Oregon and Montana both allow legal sports betting, but each runs it as a single-operator state monopoly rather than an open market.
In Oregon, online betting has been legal since 2019. The Oregon Lottery first ran its own app (Scoreboard), then handed mobile betting over to DraftKings in January 2022, and DraftKings remains the only legal online sportsbook in the state. There are a couple of catches worth knowing: you cannot bet on any college sports in Oregon, including in-state teams and college props, and retail betting is limited to a handful of tribal casinos. Bettors must be 21 or older.
Montana works in a similar way. Sports betting became legal in 2019 and launched in March 2020 through Sports Bet Montana, the Montana Lottery’s product. You can download the app and register, deposit and build a bet slip from anywhere in the state, but the wager itself can only be confirmed while you are physically inside one of the hundreds of licensed retail locations (bars, taverns, casinos and the like). No national sportsbooks are allowed in, and the betting age is 18.
The upshot for both states is the same: one state-run book, a limited betting menu, and no way to shop around for a better line. In this example, Ilia Topuria is a -550 favorite to win the fight. This means you would have to risk $550 to win $100 betting on Topuria. Justin Gaethje is the +400 underdog, which means a $100 bet on Oliveira would win $400 (payout of $500).
